Traditional Indian Spiced Beverages: Saffron Milk, Masala Chai and More

By Webmaster Darsh 24/Sep/2026 32

Indian culinary traditions include a wide range of beverages prepared using milk, tea, fruits, herbs, and aromatic spices. Many of these drinks are simple to prepare at home.

Masala chai is prepared using tea, milk, and selected spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and black pepper. Saffron milk is another traditional preparation that combines milk with saffron and may include cardamom or nuts.

Popular Indian spiced beverages include:

  • Masala chai with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
  • Saffron milk prepared using soaked saffron strands.
  • Cardamom milk with nuts and selected spices.
  • Spiced warm milk with cinnamon and other ingredients.
  • Traditional festive beverages prepared with saffron and nuts.

The key to good spiced beverages is balance. Strong spices should complement rather than overpower the main ingredient.

Whole spices can be lightly crushed before brewing to release their aroma, while saffron is often soaked before being added to liquid preparations.
