Saffron in Everyday Food: Uses, Preparation Tips and Traditional Recipes

By Webmaster Darsh 21/Sep/2026 67

Saffron is one of the most distinctive culinary ingredients used in Indian and international cuisine. Known for its delicate aroma, warm color, and characteristic flavor, saffron is traditionally used in milk-based beverages, desserts, rice preparations, and festive foods.

One of the most useful techniques when cooking with saffron is soaking. A few saffron strands can be placed in warm milk or water for around 10–15 minutes before being added to a recipe. This allows the color and aroma to spread throughout the preparation.

Popular ways to use saffron include:

  • Add soaked saffron to warm milk for traditional kesar milk.
  • Use saffron-infused milk in kheer, rabdi, or other desserts.
  • Add saffron to rice preparations for aroma and visual appeal.
  • Use saffron in homemade kulfi and other frozen desserts.
  • Combine saffron with cardamom and nuts in festive recipes.

Saffron should generally be used in moderation. Its distinctive character means a small quantity can be enough to influence the overall recipe.

Proper storage is equally important. Keep saffron in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.
