Methi in Indian Cooking: Traditional Uses, Nutrition and Easy Meal Ideas

By Webmaster Darsh 09/Sep/2026 32

Methi, or fenugreek leaves, is a popular ingredient in Indian kitchens. Fresh and dried forms are used in many traditional preparations because of their distinctive aroma and slightly bitter taste. Methi can add depth and character to everyday meals.

Dried fenugreek leaves are particularly convenient because they can be stored for longer periods and used whenever required. They are commonly added to vegetables, breads, curries, dals, and spice blends.

Ways to use methi in everyday cooking:

  • Add dried methi leaves to vegetable curries for aromatic flavor.
  • Mix methi into dough when preparing homemade rotis or parathas.
  • Add crushed dried leaves to dal for additional aroma.
  • Use methi in selected paneer and potato preparations.
  • Combine methi with other spices for flavorful homemade dishes.

Because methi has a strong flavor, a moderate quantity is usually enough. Store dried methi in an airtight container away from humidity.
